Participle Phrases

Level 5

A participle phrase can do the work of a relative clause: ჩემ მიერ დაწერილი წერილი (the letter written by me).

How It Works

English puts a describing phrase after the noun: the letter written by me. Georgian puts it before the noun, with the participle last:

  • ჩემ მიერ დაწერილი წერილი (the letter written by me)
  • ნინოს მიერ მომზადებული სადილი (the lunch made by Nino)
  • გუშინ გაგზავნილი წერილი (the letter sent yesterday)

The phrase can hold a doer with -ის მიერ, a time, a place or a manner: ახლად გახსნილი კაფე (the newly opened café).

The participle changes like an adjective, so before a noun in the dative or with a postposition it drops its -ი: ახლად გახსნილ კაფეში ვისადილეთ (we had lunch at the newly opened café).

The same idea can be said with რომელიც: წერილი, რომელიც მე დავწერე. Participle phrases are shorter and common in writing; რომელიც clauses are more common in conversation.

Some participles use ნა- instead of a preverb, such as ნანახი (seen) and ნაქსოვი (knitted). They have their own topic at Level 6.
