-ის მიერ
By Someone
In a passive, -ის მიერ names who did it: არქიტექტორის მიერ (by the architect).
How It Works
მიერ (mier) means by, for the doer of a passive. The doer goes in the genitive:
- ეს სახლი ცნობილი არქიტექტორის მიერ არის აშენებული. (This house was built by a famous architect.)
- წიგნი ქართულად ნინოს მიერ ითარგმნა. (The book was translated into Georgian by Nino.)
It goes with a participle and არის (is built, is written) and with the past passive (was translated).
With pronouns, a short form comes before მიერ: ჩემ მიერ (by me), შენ მიერ (by you), მის მიერ (by him or her), მათ მიერ (by them).
You will meet -ის მიერ in books and the news. In everyday talk, an active sentence is more natural: ეს სურათი ბავშვებმა დახატეს (the children drew this picture).
