ი- (Is Being Done)
Is Being Done
Many doing verbs form a passive with ი- and -ება: იწერება (is written), იყიდება (is for sale).
How It Works
In a passive, the thing that is acted on becomes the subject. Many doing verbs make it with ი- (i-) before the root and -ება at the end:
| Doing verb | Passive |
|---|---|
| წერს (writes) | იწერება (is written, is spelled) |
| ყიდის (sells) | იყიდება (is for sale) |
| ინახავს (keeps) | ინახება (is kept) |
| თარგმნის (translates) | ითარგმნება (is translated) |
The subject is in the nominative: ეს სიტყვა იწერება. Plural things keep the singular verb: წიგნები იყიდება (books for sale).
The present passive often gives a general fact: ბინა იყიდება (apartment for sale) on a sign, or ღვინო ქვევრში ინახება (the wine is kept in a qvevri).
Some verbs use -დ- instead, such as შენდება (is being built). The past passive adds a preverb, as the next topic shows.
In everyday talk, Georgians often use an active they-sentence: აქ ქართულად ლაპარაკობენ (Georgian is spoken here).
