რა means what.

How It Works

Question	Meaning
რა არის ეს?	What is this?
რა გქვია?	What's your name? (literally what are you called?)
რა გინდა?	What do you want?
რა ღირს?	How much is it?
რა ხდება?	What's happening?

Because the question word goes right before the verb, both რა არის ეს? and ეს რა არის? are normal.

რა changes case like a noun. When it is the object of a verb like აკეთებ (do) or სვამ (drink), use რას: რას სვამ? (What are you drinking?) See the topic on question words in other cases.
