Doer Participles
Participles with მ- name the one who does something: მწერალი (writer), მასწავლებელი (teacher).
How It Works
The present participle names the one who does the action. It starts with მ- (m-) and usually ends in -ელი, -ალი or -არი:
| Verb | Doer |
|---|---|
| წერს (writes) | მწერალი (writer) |
| ასწავლის (teaches) | მასწავლებელი (teacher) |
| კითხულობს (reads) | მკითხველი (reader) |
| ხატავს (paints) | მხატვარი (painter) |
| მღერის (sings) | მომღერალი (singer) |
| ცხოვრობს (lives) | მცხოვრები (resident) |
Many of these are now ordinary nouns for jobs and roles. They take case endings like other nouns: მწერალმა (ergative), მასწავლებელს (dative).
Some also stand before a noun like an adjective, such as მომავალი (coming): მომავალ კვირას (next week).
The plural of მცხოვრები is მცხოვრებლები (residents), with an extra ლ.
