Adjectives in Other Cases

Level 2

An adjective ending in -ი drops it before a dative noun or a postposition.

How It Works

CaseExampleMeaning
nominativeდიდი სახლიa big house
dativeდიდ სახლსa big house (as an object)
with -შიდიდ სახლშიin a big house
genitiveდიდი სახლისof a big house
instrumentalდიდი მანქანითin a big car
vowel adjectiveპატარა სახლშიin a small house

The adjective never takes the plural: დიდი სახლები (big houses), დიდ სახლებში (in big houses).

The same rule gives ქართულ ენას ვსწავლობ (I'm learning the Georgian language).

With a past-tense doer, the adjective takes -მა: დიდმა ძაღლმა. That comes at Level 3.

Examples (5)

  1. დიდ სახლში ვცხოვრობთ.

We live in a big house.

    Before -ში, დიდი becomes დიდ.

  2. ახალ წიგნს ვკითხულობ.

    I'm reading a new book.

Before a dative noun, ახალი becomes ახალ.

  3. ძველ თბილისში ბევრი ტურისტი არის.

There are a lot of tourists in Old Tbilisi.

    ძველი becomes ძველ.

  4. პატარა ბავშვს ვხედავ.

    I see a small child.

პატარა ends in a vowel, so it stays the same.

  5. მწვანე ჩაის ვსვამ.

    I'm drinking green tea.

    მწვანე never changes.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the -ი before -ში.

    დიდი სახლში ვცხოვრობთ.
    დიდ სახლში ვცხოვრობთ.

Before -ში, the adjective drops its -ი.
