အလို့ငှာ

After a noun, it means "for the sake of": ပြည်သူတို့၏ ကျန်းမာရေးအလို့ငှာ (for the health of the people).

How It Works

အလို့ငှာ means "in order to" or "for the sake of". It names the goal before the action.

With a verb, keep the written purpose word ရန် in front: တိုးတက်စေရန်အလို့ငှာ. The causative စေ often comes too, for a goal that makes something happen: "so that education improves".

With a noun, put အလို့ငှာ straight after it: ကျန်းမာရေးအလို့ငှာ, အဆင်ပြေမှုအလို့ငှာ.

You see it in speeches, mission statements, the plaques on new buildings and announcements of donations: a library opened to improve education, a hospital built for the people's health. It sounds grand. Plain news uses ရန် or အတွက်, and everyday talk uses ဖို့.

Spoken ဖို့ never goes in front of အလို့ငှာ. The verb takes ရန်, so the whole phrase stays written.

The goal phrase can be long. Everything before ရန်အလို့ငှာ belongs to the goal, and everything after it is the action: in a donation notice, ကလေးများ ပညာသင်ကြားနိုင်ရန်အလို့ငှာ (so that children can study) comes before who gave what.

  3. သဘာဝပတ်ဝန်းကျင် ထိန်းသိမ်းရန်အလို့ငှာ သစ်ပင်များ စိုက်ပျိုးကြသည်။

    They plant trees to protect the environment.

    The goal comes first, then what people do.

  4. ကလေးများ ပညာသင်ကြားနိုင်ရန်အလို့ငှာ ဦးအောင်ကျော်သည် ငွေသိန်း ၅၀ လှူဒါန်းခဲ့သည်။

    U Aung Kyaw donated 5 million kyat so that children can study.

    အလို့ငှာ follows the noun အဆင်ပြေမှု.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting spoken ဖို့ before အလို့ငှာ.
