Action Nouns in Writing

The new noun can be a subject with သည်, an object with ကို, or a title on its own.

How It Works

ခြင်း makes a noun from a verb, like "-ing" in English: စာဖတ်ခြင်းသည် အကျိုးရှိသည်။ (Reading is useful.)

The new noun takes the same markers as any noun.

  • As the subject, with သည်: လမ်းလျှောက်ခြင်းသည် ကောင်းသည်။
  • As the object, with ကို: ဥယျာဉ်စိုက်ပျိုးခြင်းကို နှစ်သက်သည်။
  • As a cause, with ကြောင့်: မရောက်ခြင်းကြောင့် (because of not arriving).

For a negative action, put မ before the verb: အချိန်မီ မရောက်ခြင်း (not arriving on time).

Titles of courses, signs and book chapters often end in ခြင်း and have no sentence ending: ကွန်ပျူတာ အသုံးပြုခြင်း သင်တန်း (a course on using computers).

Writing has two more ways to make nouns. မှု names an idea or a result (ပြောင်းလဲမှု, change), and ရေး names a field (ပညာရေး, education). ခြင်း always names the action itself.

A whole verb phrase can come before ခြင်း, objects and all: ကွန်ပျူတာ အသုံးပြုခြင်း (using a computer). The noun phrase then works as a single unit in the sentence.

  1. နေ့စဉ် လမ်းလျှောက်ခြင်းသည် ကျန်းမာရေးအတွက် ကောင်းသည်။

    Walking every day is good for your health.

    လမ်းလျှောက်ခြင်း is the subject, marked with သည်.

  2. ဘာသာစကား သင်ယူခြင်းသည် အချိန်ယူရသည်။

    Learning a language takes time.

    ခြင်း turns သင်ယူ (learn) into the noun "learning".

  3. ဦးအောင်ကျော်သည် ဥယျာဉ်စိုက်ပျိုးခြင်းကို နှစ်သက်သည်။

    U Aung Kyaw enjoys gardening.

    The action noun is the object, marked with ကို.

  4. ကွန်ပျူတာ အသုံးပြုခြင်း သင်တန်း

    A Course on Using Computers

    A course title ends in a ခြင်း noun with no sentence ending.

  5. အချိန်မီ မရောက်ခြင်းကြောင့် လေယာဉ် လွတ်သွားသည်။

    He missed the plane because he did not arrive on time.

    မ makes the action negative, and ကြောင့် makes it the cause.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the spoken တာ as a noun in a written sentence.

    စာဖတ်တာသည် အကျိုးရှိသည်။
    စာဖတ်ခြင်းသည် အကျိုးရှိသည်။

    With သည် and a written ending, the action noun is ခြင်း.
