အောင်

So That

Level 3

With cooking and effort, အောင် often means "until": အသားနူးအောင် ကြာကြာချက်ပါ။ (Cook it a long time, until the meat is tender.)

How It Works

အောင် names a result. The result comes first, and the action that brings it about comes second.

ResultActionEnglish
မမေ့အောင်ရေးထားပါ။Write it down so you don't forget.
နောက်မကျအောင်စောစောထွက်မယ်။I'll leave early so I'm not late.
ကလေးတွေ ကြားအောင်ကျယ်ကျယ်ပြောပါ။Speak up so the children can hear.
တတ်အောင်လေ့ကျင့်တယ်။I practise until I can do it.

The result can belong to someone else, as in ကလေးတွေ ကြားအောင် (so the children hear). ဖို့ is for the doer's own goal: ဈေးဝယ်ဖို့ သွားတယ် (I go to do some shopping).

For a negative result, မ goes before the verb, right where it always goes: မမေ့အောင် (so I don't forget), နောက်မကျအောင် (so I'm not late).

ရအောင် at the end of a sentence means "let's". That is a separate pattern.

Examples (5)

Common Mistakes

  • Putting မ after the verb.

    မေ့မအောင် ရေးထားပါ။
    မမေ့အောင် ရေးထားပါ။

မ always goes before the verb, also inside an အောင် clause.
