How It Works

EndingMeaningExample
কৰা হয়is done (as a rule)পিঠা কেনেকৈ তৈয়াৰ কৰা হয়? “How is pitha made?”
কৰা হ’লwas done (once)ভাস্কৰক সন্মান কৰা হ’ল। “Bhaskar was honoured.”

This is the style of news and school books. The text names the action and leaves the doer out.

A person who receives the action keeps the ending -ক: ভাস্কৰক “Bhaskar”, সকলোকে “everyone”. A thing has no ending: চাহৰ খেতি কৰা হয় “tea is grown”.

A verb can also be a longer -ওৱা word, as in পঠিওৱা হ’ল “was sent”. To name the person who acted, add -ৰ দ্বাৰা.
