Level 2Sounds Like ha'ōm̐ / hōraā / haẏa

হ “be, become” gives মই হওঁ, তুমি হোৱা and সি হয়; হয় also means “happens”, as in কি হয়? “what happens?”.

How It Works

The verb হ tells what someone becomes or what happens.

PersonFormNegative
মইহওঁনহওঁ
তুমিহোৱানোহোৱা
সি, তাই, আপুনিহয়নহয়

Examples: চাওঁ কি হয় “let us see what happens” and পানী গৰম হয় “the water gets hot”.

The word হয় is also the short answer “yes”, which is a different use with its own topic.

The endings -ওঁ, -ৱা and -য় are the same as for খা, ল, ক and চা. The apostrophe appears in the future, as in হ’ব “will be”.

Examples (5)

  1. কি হয়?

    What happens?

    হয় is the সি form.

  2. চাওঁ কি হয়।

    Let us see what happens.

    হয় ends the clause.

  3. মই তাৰে নহওঁ।

    I do not belong.

    The negative is ন + হওঁ.

  4. তুমি সফল নোহোৱা।

    You will not succeed.

The negative is নো + হোৱা. Here, as often with this verb, the negative present speaks about the future.

    The water gets hot.

    হয় means “becomes” here.
