মই / আমি

I and We

Level 1Sounds Like ma'i / āmi

মই চাহ খাওঁ “I drink tea” and আমি ভিতৰত আছোঁ “we are inside” use the same ending, ওঁ.

How It Works

The two words are alike in their verbs. Only the pronoun tells you how many people are acting.

WordMeaningVerb endingExample
মইI-ওঁমই কাম কৰোঁ “I work”
আমিwe-ওঁআমি ভাত খাওঁ “we eat rice”

After the nasal consonants ঙ, ঞ, ণ, ন and ম the ending loses its mark: মই জানো “I know”.

If you know Bengali, take care. Bengali আমি means “I”, but Assamese আমি means “we”. For one person, say মই.

Assamese often leaves a pronoun out when the context is clear. The ending -ওঁ still shows that the speaker is one of the people acting, but it is the same for “I” and “we”, so the context tells you which.

Common Mistakes

  • Using আমি for one person, as in Bengali.

    আমি ঘৰত আছোঁ।
    মই ঘৰত আছোঁ।

The first sentence means “We are at home”. For “I”, say মই.
