Being Somewhere or Somehow

Level 1Sounds Like āchōm̐ / āchā / āchē

আমি ভিতৰত আছোঁ “we are inside” and তুমি কেনে আছা? “how are you?” use the same verb.

How It Works

Use আছ for where someone is and for how someone is.

WhoFormExample
মই, আমিআছোঁআমি ভিতৰত আছোঁ “we are inside”
তুমিআছাতুমি কেনে আছা? “how are you?”
আপুনি, তেওঁ, সি, তাইআছেসি ঘৰত আছে “he is at home”

To say how you are, add ভালে “well”: মই ভালে আছোঁ “I am well”.

The form আছে is the same word that means “there is” in the next row.

Questions use the same verb. ক’ত আছা? asks where you are, and কেনে আছা? asks how you are. The answer repeats the verb: ভালে আছোঁ.

Examples (5)

    তুমি takes the ending -া.

  4. সি ঘৰত আছে।

Common Mistakes

  • Using the ending for আপুনি with তুমি.

    তুমি কেনে আছে?
    তুমি কেনে আছা?

    After তুমি the form is আছা. The form আছে goes with আপুনি, তেওঁ, সি and তাই.
