Reading Assamese Script
Assamese is written from left to right. অসমীয়া “Assamese” and ভাষা “language” are built from consonant letters, vowel letters and vowel signs.
How It Works
Assamese is written from left to right. Three kinds of marks build every word.
| Part | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| vowel letter | a full vowel, found where no consonant comes before it | আ in আখৰ “letter” |
| consonant letter | a consonant with a short vowel | ক, ম, ন |
| vowel sign | a mark beside a consonant that gives it a vowel | া in ভাষা “language” |
If you know the Bengali script, most letters look familiar. Assamese has two letters that Bengali no longer uses, ৰ and ৱ. The joined shape ক্ষ is written the same way in both scripts, but Assamese counts it as a letter of its own alphabet, while Bengali usually treats it as ক and ষ joined. The next lessons take the vowels, the sounds and the special marks one by one.
