Vowel Letters and Vowel Signs
আ and ই are full vowel letters. In কা and কি the same vowels are signs beside ক.
How It Works
Ten of the vowel letters have a matching sign. The table shows them on ক.
| Vowel letter | Sign on ক | Vowel letter | Sign on ক |
|---|---|---|---|
| আ | কা | এ | কে |
| ই | কি | ঐ | কৈ |
| ঈ | কী | ও | কো |
| উ | কু | ঔ | কৌ |
| ঊ | কূ | ঋ | কৃ |
The eleventh vowel letter অ has no sign. A consonant with no sign already carries it. That is the hidden vowel.
Signs sit in different places. Most come after the consonant, like া. The signs ি and ে are drawn before it, and ু sits under it. The sign ো goes on both sides. Read a consonant first, then add the vowel its sign gives.
