-ক for the Receiver

The Person Who Gets the Action: -ক

Level 2Sounds Like ka

-ক marks the person or animal that gets the action. Things usually stay bare.

How It Works

The ending -ক marks the one who receives the action.

  • Telling and giving: ৰফিকুলক কওক “tell Rafiqul”. মই ৰিনাক চাহ দিওঁ “I give Rina tea”.
  • Liking and holding: মই তোমাক ভাল পাওঁ “I like you”. তেওঁক ধৰক “grab him”.

The ending goes on a particular person or animal. A thing without life usually stays bare: মই ভাত খাওঁ “I eat rice”. In writing, a particular thing can take it too, as in কিতাপখনক “the book”, but you can leave it off. In মই ৰিনাক চাহ দিওঁ the person takes -ক and the tea does not.

A person you have not met yet can stay bare: মই ৰাস্তাত এজন ল’ৰা দেখোঁ “I see a boy in the street”.

Pronouns have their own forms with -ক: মোক, তোমাক, আপোনাক, তাক, তাইক, তেওঁক.

One sentence can use both endings, each on a different noun. In মাকে ৰিনাক চাহ দিয়ে “Mother gives Rina tea”, মাকে acts and ৰিনাক gets the tea.

    মই ভাত খাওঁ।

-ক is for particular people and animals. Rice is a plain thing, so it stays bare.
