The Nasal Mark ঁ

Foundations

বাঁহ “bamboo” has the mark and বাহ “nest” does not. They are different words.

How It Works

When a vowel carries ঁ, say it with some air through the nose. The mark is part of the spelling.

With the markWithout it
বাঁহ “bamboo”বাহ “nest”
তেওঁ “he, she”তেও “yet, still”

The ending -ওঁ goes with মই “I” and আমি “we”: আছোঁ “I am, we are”, কৰোঁ “I do, we do”, খাওঁ “I eat, we eat”, যাওঁ “I go, we go”.

After the nasal consonants ঙ, ঞ, ণ, ন and ম, the ending loses the mark. So you write জানো “I know” and শুনো “I hear”.

When you type, put the mark after the vowel it touches: বাঁহ is ব, া, ঁ and হ.

Examples (5)

  1. বাঁহ

    Bamboo.

The mark makes the vowel nasal.

  2. আছোঁ

    I am.

The first-person ending ওঁ carries the mark.

  3. কৰোঁ

    I do.

The same ending sits after ৰ.

  4. খাওঁ

    I eat.

The ending ওঁ follows the vowel stem.

  5. তেওঁ

    He, she.

    The mark ends this pronoun.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the mark off a pronoun.

    তেও ঘৰত আছে।
    তেওঁ ঘৰত আছে।

Without the mark, তেও is a different word that means “yet”. Write তেওঁ for “he” or “she”.
