اگر ... Perfective Verb + ہوتا

A Counterfactual Past Condition

Level 4

If that had happened → this would have followed.

How It Works

Use a completed verb form with ہوتا, ہوتی, or ہوتے when imagining an alternative to a past event. The result can use the same pattern when it too is a completed past possibility.

A transitive verb that takes نے in the perfective keeps it here. An unmarked object can control both the completed form and ہوتا. With no available agreement controller, the masculine singular default remains.

The speaker often expresses regret, relief, or an explanation of a missed possibility. The construction does not require blame. A result about the present can use a different form when the time changes.

Examples (4)

  1. اگر میں جلدی پہنچا ہوتا تو مجھے جگہ مل گئی ہوتی۔

If I had arrived early, I would have found a seat.

The male speaker imagines an earlier arrival; جگہ controls گئی ہوتی.

  2. اگر مریم نے خط پڑھا ہوتا تو اسے بات سمجھ آ گئی ہوتی۔

If Maryam had read the letter, she would have understood.

خط, rather than Maryam, controls پڑھا ہوتا after نے.

  3. اگر ہم نے کھڑکی بند کی ہوتی تو کمرہ اتنا ٹھنڈا نہ ہوا ہوتا۔

If we had closed the window, the room would not have become so cold.

کھڑکی controls کی ہوتی; کمرہ controls ہوا ہوتا.

  4. اگر تم نے مجھے بتایا ہوتا تو میں مدد کر سکتا تھا۔

If you had told me, I could have helped.

The result expresses an available ability rather than repeating the condition form.
