Tense and Aspect

Foundations

Read the whole verbal group. A participle and a form of “to be” can work together to show different parts of the meaning.

How It Works

Compare ندا ہنستی ہے with ندا ہنس رہی ہے. The first can describe Nida's habit; the second focuses on her laughing now.

Changing the final auxiliary changes the time: ہنستی تھی can describe a past habit, and ہنس رہی تھی an event that was in progress. The aspect contrast remains.

ندا ہنسی presents a completed event in this context. A perfective form is not a rule to translate every English past tense the same way: a past routine or an ongoing past event needs its own construction.

The feminine forms here follow Nida. Agreement can work differently with transitive perfective verbs and marked noun phrases, so learn those constructions before applying one subject-agreement rule everywhere.
