Person and Respect

Foundations

Choose a form of “you” with its matching verb. آپ is a useful respectful starting point with unfamiliar adults.

How It Works

In میں تیار ہوں, the speaker uses ہوں. A group including the speaker uses ہم تیار ہیں.

For the listener, compare تم تیار ہو with آپ تیار ہیں. تم fits familiar relationships, while آپ gives respectful address. The choice depends on the relationship and situation, not simply the listener's age.

تو takes ہے here, but it is strongly context-dependent. It can express close intimacy, devotional address or an insult. Do not use it as a general singular version of آپ.

Respect can also affect agreement when speaking about someone. استاد یہاں ہیں may refer respectfully to one teacher. Use context to distinguish respectful singular from an ordinary plural.

    آپ تیار ہو۔
    آپ تیار ہیں۔

For the standard respectful pattern taught here, pair آپ with ہیں. تم pairs with ہو.
