Agreement with an Unmarked Object

Level 2

Change the object and watch the perfective change with it.

How It Works

Read مریم نے خط لکھا and مریم نے کہانی لکھی. The subject is unchanged. Masculine خط selects لکھا, while feminine کہانی selects لکھی.

Number can change the form too: کہانیاں goes with لکھیں. This is the feminine plural perfective in a simple past sentence, without a following copula.

A recipient marked with کو does not prevent another, unmarked direct object from controlling agreement. In بلال نے مریم کو کہانی سنائی, the story selects سنائی.

Examples (4)

  1. مریم نے خط لکھا۔

    Maryam wrote a letter.

    Masculine خط selects لکھا.

  2. مریم نے کہانی لکھی۔

    Maryam wrote a story.

    Feminine کہانی selects لکھی.

  3. مریم نے کہانیاں لکھیں۔

    Maryam wrote stories.

    Feminine plural کہانیاں selects لکھیں.

  4. بلال نے مریم کو کہانی سنائی۔

    Bilal told Maryam a story.

The unmarked story controls agreement, not the کو-marked recipient.

Common Mistakes

  • Matching the verb to a feminine doer instead of masculine خط.

    مریم نے خط لکھی۔
    مریم نے خط لکھا۔

The unmarked masculine object controls this perfective.
