نے + Object کو + Masculine Singular Verb

Default Agreement with a Marked Object

Level 2

A masculine-looking verb does not always describe a male person.

How It Works

In مریم نے ندا کو بلایا, neither مریم nor ندا selects feminine agreement. The subject has نے, and the direct object has کو, so the verb uses بلایا.

The same applies to a plural marked object: مریم نے لڑکیوں کو بلایا. The plural girls do not change بلایا to a feminine plural form.

Distinguish a marked direct object from a marked recipient. In مریم نے ندا کو کتاب دی, کتاب is still an unmarked direct object and selects feminine دی. Seeing کو anywhere in the sentence is not enough to choose the default.

Examples (4)

  1. مریم نے ندا کو بلایا۔

    Maryam called Nida.

Both participants are marked; بلایا has default agreement.

  2. مریم نے لڑکیوں کو بلایا۔

    Maryam called the girls.

Plurality on a کو-marked direct object does not control the verb.

  3. انہوں نے مجھے دیکھا۔

    They saw me.

مجھے is an object form with کو value; دیکھا stays default.

  4. مریم نے ندا کو کتاب دی۔

    Maryam gave Nida a book.

Contrast: unmarked feminine کتاب controls دی; ندا کو is the recipient.
