Perfective Verb + تھا / تھی

An Event Completed Before a Past Point

Level 3

Link one completed event to another moment in the past.

How It Works

In جب بلال آیا، مریم نے پہلے ہی کھانا کھایا تھا, Maryam had already eaten before Bilal arrived. The perfective کھایا combines with the past form تھا.

Changing ہے to تھا does not remove نے or switch agreement back to the doer. Compare مریم نے خط لکھا تھا and مریم نے کہانی لکھی تھی; the object selects the gender.

With an unmarked intransitive subject, the subject controls agreement: گاڑی رکی تھی. The reference point can come from an earlier sentence, so every past perfect does not need its own explicit “before” clause.

Do not translate every such form with English “had.” Urdu can use it for a completed event in a past account without setting up another past event. In that context, English simple past may be more natural.
