Mark the doer with نے when the transitive perfective construction requires it.

How It Works

Compare مریم خط لکھتی تھی with مریم نے خط لکھا. The first is a past habit with subject agreement. The second reports a completed act of writing and marks Maryam with نے.

The subject marker does not change for gender: بلال نے and مریم نے both use نے. A preceding pronoun or noun may require an oblique form; learn those forms separately.

Check the particular verb and its construction as well as the aspect. Some familiar verbs, including لانا in its usual “bring” use, do not follow the basic نے pattern. Do not turn “a past event” into a universal rule.

    کھولنا is transitive and perfective here.

    نے follows the doer of the completed writing.

    The plural noun takes لڑکوں before نے.

    Maryam was writing a letter.

    The progressive contrast has no نے and keeps subject agreement.
