Completed Intransitive Events

Level 2

Narrate a completed event such as arriving, sleeping or falling.

How It Works

In گاڑی رکی, feminine گاڑی selects رکی. Changing the subject to masculine ٹرک gives ٹرک رکا. The agreement follows the thing that stopped.

A plural subject changes the form again: گاڑیاں رکیں. A respectful person can also require plural agreement. The perfective endings differ from the present habitual endings.

Learn irregular verbs alongside the regular pattern. جانا gives گیا or گئی, not a form made by simply adding ا to جا. Transitive perfectives with نے follow a separate agreement rule.

Examples (4)

  1. گاڑی رکی۔

    The vehicle stopped.

    The feminine subject selects رکی.

  2. ٹرک رکا۔

    The truck stopped.

    The masculine subject selects رکا.

  3. گاڑیاں رکیں۔

    The vehicles stopped.

Feminine plural agreement appears in رکیں.

  4. مریم گھر گئی۔

    Maryam went home.

جانا uses irregular گئی with a feminine subject.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding نے to an ordinary “went” sentence.

    مریم نے گھر گئی۔
    مریم گھر گئی۔

This intransitive use of جانا takes an unmarked subject.
