стати/залишатися + Participle
Resulting-State Predicate with Participle
The pattern стати/залишатися + participle (Instrumental) describes the state a subject enters or continues to be in after an action is completed.
How It Works
This construction, known as a resulting-state predicate (результативний стан), is a core feature of Ukrainian syntax.
1. Meaning and Aspect:
Unlike a simple passive sentence which focuses on the event, this pattern focuses on the condition that persists. To denote a completed transition into a state, this construction almost exclusively uses participles derived from perfective verbs.
- Стати (to become) indicates the transition into a state.
- Залишатися (to remain) indicates the persistence of a state.
2. Morphology and Case:
The participle must agree with the subject in gender and number, but its case is governed by the linking verb and must be Instrumental. This applies to both major types of passive past participles:
- -ний type: Masculine -ним (зачиненим), Feminine -ною (зачиненою), Plural -ними (зачиненими).
- -тий type: Masculine -тим (розбитим), Feminine -тою (розбитою), Plural -тими (розбитими).
3. Register:
This is a standard, neutral construction used in both speech and writing. While learners are often told Ukrainian avoids participles, this specifically applies to active present participles. Passive past participles in -ний and -тий are very common and natural in this resulting-state pattern.
Examples (4)
- Двері залишилися зачиненими протягом усієї ночі.
The doors remained closed throughout the entire night.
Word by Word: Doors remained closed (instrumental) during all night.
Here, 'залишилися' (remained) requires the plural instrumental form 'зачиненими' to describe the state of the doors.
- Після оновлення системи дані стали впорядкованими.
After the system update, the data became organized.
Word by Word: After update [of] system data became organized (instrumental).
The verb 'стали' (became) triggers the instrumental case for the participle 'впорядкованими'.
- Він хотів, щоб його слова залишилися почутими.
He wanted his words to remain heard.
Word by Word: He wanted that his words remained heard (instrumental).
Even in a 'щоб' clause, the rule holds: 'залишилися' governs the instrumental 'почутими'.
- Вікно стало розбитим через бурю.
The window became broken because of the storm.
Word by Word: Window became broken (instrumental) through storm.
The neuter subject 'вікно' agrees with the neuter instrumental participle 'розбитим'.
Common Mistakes
Using the nominative case instead of the instrumental.
Він став виснажений.Він став виснаженим.While the nominative is used with the zero copula (Він виснажений), verbs like 'стати' and 'залишатися' require the instrumental case.
Confusing the resulting state with the impersonal passive.
Двері залишилися зачинено.Двері залишилися зачиненими.The form ending in -но/-то is for impersonal actions without a subject. When a subject (двері) is present with 'залишатися', you must use the inflected participle.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn this pattern, you need to understand how the verbs 'стати' (to become) and 'залишатися' (to remain) function as linking verbs that require the instrumental case. Additionally, you must be familiar with the formation of passive participles and how they agree in case, number, and gender when acting as a predicate.
- -нийPassive Participle in -ний
The learner must be able to form and recognize passive participles, which serve as the state-describing component in this construction.
Level 4 - Predicate Adjective in the Instrumental
Since participles function like adjectives, understanding how adjectives take the instrumental case in a predicate position is essential for correct agreement.
