писати/написати
Aspect Pair Писати/написати
The pair писати/написати is the standard way to express 'to write' in Ukrainian. Писати (imperfective) focuses on the act of writing itself, while написати (perfective) focuses on finishing the task.
How It Works
This pair is a classic example of prefixed aspect pairs. The perfective is formed by adding the prefix на-, which in this case acts as a 'pure' marker of completion. While other prefixes like за- (to write down) or під- (to sign) change the lexical meaning, на- simply makes the verb perfective.
1. Conjugation and Mutations:
Both verbs undergo a consonant mutation in the stem. The с changes to ш in all present forms, the simple perfective future, and the imperative (пиши, напиши):
- я пишу / я напишу
- ти пишеш / ти напишеш
Note that in the present and simple future, the stress shifts from the ending (пишу) to the stem (пишеш) in all forms except the first person singular. Also note that the stress falls on the ending in the imperative (пиши, напишіть) and on the suffix in the past tense (писав, написала). Crucially, the consonant mutation does not occur in the past tense or the imperfective future, where the stem remains the same as the infinitive: я писав, я писатиму. Additionally, the mutation does not occur in the passive participle. While the perfective написаний (written) is most common, the imperfective also has a participle писаний, often used for things that are 'painted' or 'in the state of being written'.
2. Usage Scenarios:
- Use imperfective (писати) when the duration matters: Я писав дві години (I was writing for two hours).
- Use perfective (написати) when the result is what matters: Я написав статтю (I finished/wrote the article).
3. Future Tense:
For the imperfective, you can use the analytic future (я буду писати) or the synthetic future (я писатиму). For the perfective, the verb forms its own simple future (я напишу) without using 'буду'.
4. Transitivity and Case:
Both verbs take the Accusative direct object for the thing being written. If the verb is negated, the object often takes the Genitive of Negated Object (e.g., Я не писав листа - I didn't write a letter). To express the recipient, use the Dative case. You can also specify the tool using the Instrumental Means (писати ручкою - to write with a pen), the topic using про + Accusative, and the medium using the Locative case.

Word by Word: We long-time were-writing this essay.
Uses the imperfective 'писали' because the focus is on the duration ('довго').
Common Mistakes
Forgetting the consonant mutation (с → ш) in the present or future.
Я писаю листа.Я пишу листа.The stem 'писа-' changes to 'пиш-' in the present and future tenses. It is particularly important to avoid the common beginner error 'Я писаю', because in Ukrainian this actually means 'I am peeing'!
Using 'буду' with the perfective verb.
Я буду написати книгу.Я напишу книгу.The auxiliary 'буду' can only be used with imperfective infinitives. Perfective verbs like 'написати' form the future by changing their endings (я напишу).
Using the perfective for a duration of time.
Я написав дві години.Я писав дві години.If you mention how long the writing took (duration), you must use the imperfective 'писав', even if you eventually finished.
