Resultative Participial State
The resultative state (результативний стан) uses a participle to describe a noun's current condition (e.g., 'The door is closed').
How It Works
In Ukrainian, the результативний стан focuses on the outcome of an action rather than the process. It is formed using past participles derived from perfective verbs. While mostly formed from transitive verbs (passive participles), intransitive verbs can also form resultative states using active participles.
1. Formation:
Participles are formed with four main suffixes. Note that stress often shifts compared to the perfective infinitive (e.g., зроби́ти → зро́блений, принести́ → прине́сений):
- -ен(ий) / -єн(ий): Used for stems ending in a consonant or polysyllabic stems ending in -и- or -і-. This suffix often triggers first-person singular verb consonant alternations (e.g., зробити → зроблений, запросити → запрошений).
- -н(ий): Used for stems ending in -а- or -я- (e.g., написати → написаний).
- -т(ий): Used for monosyllabic roots (e.g., бити → битий, мити → митий) or stems ending in -ну- (e.g., загорнути → загорнутий).
- -л(ий): Used for intransitive verbs to show a completed state (e.g., пожовтіти → пожовтілий, зів'янути → зів'ялий).
Note on Reflexives: When forming participles from reflexive verbs, the attached reflexive suffix -ся is dropped (e.g., злякатися → зляканий).
2. Agreement and Case:
Because these participles function as adjectives, they must follow participle agreement rules. They change their endings to match the noun's gender and number. When used as a predicate in the present tense, the participle is in the nominative case. In the past or future, while the nominative is common to emphasize the state, the predicative instrumental is also grammatically correct:
- Вікно (neut. nom.) зачинене (neut. nom.) - The window is closed.
- Двері (pl. nom.) були зачиненими (pl. instr.) - The doors were closed.
3. Tense and Word Order:
In the present tense, Ukrainian uses a zero present copula. When describing a state as a predicate, the participle often comes after the noun (Кімната прибрана - The room is cleaned). In the past and future, the copula бути is required. For the future, use буде (e.g., Кімната буде прибрана - The room will be cleaned).
4. Distinction from -но/-то:
It is important to distinguish this from the impersonal passive in -но/-то. The resultative state uses a nominative subject that the participle agrees with (Кімната прибрана). In contrast, the impersonal form has no subject and governs a direct object in the accusative case (Кімнату прибрано). Use the agreeing participle to describe the state of the object, and the -но/-то form to report that an action was completed. To become proficient in this distinction, remember that the resultative state emphasizes the quality or condition of the subject across all timeframes.
Examples (5)
- Кімната вже прибрана.
The room is already cleaned.
Word by Word: Room already cleaned.
Here, 'прибрана' is a feminine participle agreeing with the feminine noun 'кімната', placed after the noun to describe its current state (predicative use).
- Всі магазини сьогодні зачинені.
All the shops are closed today.
Word by Word: All shops today closed.
The plural participle 'зачинені' describes the state of the plural noun 'магазини'.
- На столі лежить розгорнутий лист.
An open letter is lying on the table.
Word by Word: On table lies unrolled letter.
The participle 'розгорнутий' (unrolled/open) acts as an adjective modifying 'лист'. Notice that it is placed before the noun (attributive use).
- На землі лежить пожовкле листя.
Yellowed leaves are lying on the ground.
Word by Word: On ground lies yellowed leaves.
The active past participle 'пожовкле' (yellowed) is formed with the -лий suffix from an intransitive verb, describing the completed state of the leaves.
- Ця книга була написана давно.
This book was written a long time ago.
Word by Word: This book was written long-ago.
When referring to the past, the participle is used with the past tense of бути.
Common Mistakes
Failing to agree the participle with the noun's gender.
Книга написаний.Книга написана.Participles in this construction must agree with the noun. Since 'книга' is feminine, the participle must end in -а.
Using the present tense copula 'є' unnecessarily.
Вікно є відчинене.Вікно відчинене.In modern Ukrainian, the present tense 'is' is usually omitted in this construction.
