Instrumental Means
The Instrumental of Means (орудний знаряддя) answers the question Чим? (With what? / By what means?). It is used for tools, transport, and materials without any preposition.
How It Works
The instrumental case is essential for describing how an action is physically or technically accomplished.
1. The 'No Preposition' Rule
One of the most important distinctions in Ukrainian is between means and accompaniment.
- Means: Writing with a pen = Пишу ручкою (No preposition).
- Accompaniment: Walking with a friend = Йду з другом (Uses з + instrumental).
2. Asking "With what?"
To ask about the tool or means, use the question word Чим? (the instrumental form of що). For example: Чим ти малюєш? (What are you drawing with?).
3. Common Uses
- Tools: Різати ножем (To cut with a knife).
- Transport: Їхати автобусом (To go by bus).
- Materials: Малювати фарбами (To draw with paints).
4. Noun Endings
The endings change based on gender and the stem of the noun:
- Masculine/Neuter: Usually -ом (hard stem), -ем (soft stems, and mixed stems ending in sibilants ж, ч, ш, щ), -єм (stems ending in a vowel/glide), or -ям for soft neuter nouns ending in -я.
- Feminine: Usually -ою (hard stem), -ею (soft and mixed stems), or -єю (stems ending in a vowel/glide).
- Masculine in -а/-я: Masculine nouns ending in -а/-я (e.g., Микола, колега) take the same endings as feminine nouns (-ою, -ею, -єю).
- Feminine (Consonant ending): These nouns add -ю. The final consonant doubles if positioned between two vowels, but only if the stem ends in a single consonant (сіль → сіллю). If it ends in two consonants, there is no doubling (радість → радістю). If the noun ends in a labial (б, п, в, м, ф) or р, add an apostrophe before -ю (любов → любов'ю).
- Plural: Usually -ами (hard and mixed stems) or -ями (soft stems). Some common words use the irregular ending -ми, such as діти (дітьми) and люди (людьми). Additionally, a few body parts and common words use the ending -има: очима (with eyes), плечима (with shoulders), дверима (with doors), and грошима (with money).
5. Pronouns and Adjectives
To become proficient in using the instrumental, you should also know the personal pronoun forms: мною (by/with me), тобою (by/with you), ним (by/with him/it), нею (by/with her), нами (by/with us), вами (by/with you all), ними (by/with them).
When an adjective describes the tool, it must also be in the instrumental case:
- Masculine/Neuter: -им (hard), -ім (soft), or -їм (stems ending in a vowel/glide). Example: новим ножем (with a new knife).
- Feminine: -ою (hard), -ьою (soft), or -єю (stems ending in a vowel/glide). Example: новою ручкою (with a new pen).
- Plural: -ими (hard) or -іми (soft). Example: олійними фарбами (with oil paints).
Examples (6)
- Я пишу листа ручкою.
I am writing a letter with a pen.
Word by Word: I write letter pen(instrumental).
Here, 'ручкою' is the tool used for writing. No preposition 'з' is used.
- Ми їдемо до Києва потягом.
We are going to Kyiv by train.
Word by Word: We go to Kyiv train(instrumental).
Transport is treated as a 'means' in Ukrainian, so 'потягом' is in the instrumental case.
- Він відчинив двері ключем.
He opened the door with a key.
Word by Word: He opened door key(instrumental).
The key is the physical instrument used to perform the action.
- Вона малює олійними фарбами.
She paints with oil paints.
Word by Word: She paints oil paints(instrumental).
Materials used in art are expressed using the instrumental of means. Notice that the adjective 'олійними' also takes the instrumental plural ending.
- Ви можете розрахуватися карткою.
You can pay by card.
Word by Word: You can pay card(instrumental).
The card is the medium or means of payment.
- Чим ти ріжеш хліб?
What are you cutting the bread with?
Word by Word: With-what you cut bread?
To ask about the tool or instrument used, use the question word 'чим', which is the instrumental form of 'що' (what).
Common Mistakes
Adding the preposition 'з' (with) when describing a tool.
Я ріжу хліб з ножем.Я ріжу хліб ножем.In Ukrainian, 'з ножем' implies the knife is your companion or you are holding it while doing something else. To use it as a tool, use the bare instrumental.
Using the wrong ending for mixed-stem masculine nouns.
Він б'є м'яч ножом.Він б'є м'яч ножем.Nouns ending in sibilants (ж, ч, ш, щ) take the ending -ем, not -ом.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use the instrumental case for tools or means, you must first be able to identify the gender of the noun you are using, as the endings differ for masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns. Additionally, you should be familiar with basic sentence structure to correctly place the instrument in relation to the verb.
- Masculine noun gender
Understanding masculine noun endings is necessary to apply the correct instrumental case endings for masculine tools (e.g., ніж -> ножем).
Level 1 - Neutral subject-verb-object order
The instrumental of means functions as an adverbial modifier within a standard sentence structure involving a subject and a verb.

This pattern uses the same case but requires the preposition 'з' to show accompaniment (doing something together with someone).
Level 2 - бути/стати/працювати + InstrumentalInstrumental Predicate Role
Another common use of the instrumental case, but here it defines a role or state rather than a tool.
Level 2 - цікавитися / займатися / керувати + InstrumentalVerb-Governed Instrumental
These specific verbs always require the instrumental case for their objects.
