у/в
Preposition У or В
Ukrainian uses у and в interchangeably for meaning, but their selection is strictly governed by the sounds of the words around them to avoid clashing consonants or vowels.
How It Works
In Ukrainian, the prepositions у and в are not different words; they are phonetic variants of the same preposition. They are used to indicate location (Locative case), direction (Accusative case), or possession (Possession construction) which governs the Genitive case.
When to use 'у':
- Between consonants: Він був у школі (He was at school).
- At the start of a sentence before a consonant: У лісі тихо (In the forest it is quiet).
- Before specific clusters: Always use у before words starting with в, ф, льв, св, тв, хв, зв to avoid a 'v' sound clash (e.g., у Львові, у формі).
- After a pause: Use у after a comma or period if the next word starts with a consonant.
When to use 'в':
- Between vowels: Вона була в Одесі (She was in Odesa).
- After a vowel before a consonant: Пішла в садок (Went into the garden).
- At the start of a sentence before a vowel: В очах надія (In [the] eyes is hope).
Note: While these rules are standard for prose and formal speech, they are sometimes flexible in poetry to maintain meter.
Examples (5)
- Я живу у Львові.
I live in Lviv.
Word by Word: I live in Lviv.
Uses 'у' because 'Львові' starts with the consonant cluster 'льв', which includes a 'v' sound.
- Вона зайшла в аптеку.
She went into the pharmacy.
Word by Word: She went into pharmacy.
Uses 'в' because it follows a vowel ('зайшла') and precedes a vowel ('аптеку').
- У мене є цікава книжка.
I have an interesting book.
Word by Word: At me there-is interesting book.
Uses 'у' at the start of the sentence because the next word ('мене') starts with a consonant.
- Він працює в офісі.
He works in the office.
Word by Word: He works in office.
Uses 'в' because it follows a vowel ('працює') and precedes a vowel ('офісі').
- Він був у саду.
He was in the garden.
Word by Word: He was in garden.
Uses 'у' because it is placed between two consonants ('був' and 'саду').
Common Mistakes
Using 'в' between two consonants.
Він в школі.Він у школі.Ukrainian avoids 'clumping' consonants. Since 'він' ends in a consonant and 'школі' starts with one, 'у' must be used for euphony.
Using 'у' to mean 'near' (Russian influence).
Я стою у вікна.Я стою біля вікна.In Ukrainian, 'у/в' means 'in' or 'at'. To say 'near' or 'by', use 'біля' or 'поруч'. Using 'у' for 'near' is a common error influenced by Russian.
