Locative Place with В/у

Level 2Sounds Like míscevij míscâ v/u

The Locative case with the preposition в or у answers the question Де? (Where?). It indicates a static location (being 'in' or 'at' somewhere) or a point in time (months and years).

How It Works

The Locative case never appears without a preposition. When using в/у for location:

  • Euphony (Sound Rules): Use у between two consonants, at the beginning of a sentence before a consonant, and after a pause. Crucially, у is mandatory before words starting with в, ф, or clusters like св, хв, льв, зв, тв (у Львові, у формі). Use в between a vowel and a consonant or when the following word starts with a vowel. This is part of euphony.
  • Endings:
    • Feminine nouns: Ending in -а take -і (школа → у школі). If the stem ends in к, г, х, they change: к → ц, г → з, х → с (аптека → в аптеці). This is velar consonant alternation.
    • Masculine nouns: Inanimate nouns take -і (ліс → у лісі) or -у. The ending -у is mandatory for nouns ending in -к, -ок, -ик, -ак (парк → у парку, будинок → у будинку). Animate masculine nouns (people/animals) prefer -ові, -еві, or -єві (брат → у братові).
    • Neuter nouns: Typically take -і (вікно → у вікні).
    • Plural nouns: Take -ах (hard stems) or -ях (soft stems) (школи → у школах, музеї → у музеях).
  • Usage: Generally, use в/у for enclosed spaces and на for open spaces or events.

Examples (6)

  1. У будинку все добре.

Everything is fine in the house.

Word by Word: In house all fine.

The preposition 'У' is used at the beginning of a sentence before a consonant. The masculine noun 'будинок' (house) takes the ending '-у' here.

  2. Риба живе в акваріумі.

The fish lives in the aquarium.

Word by Word: Fish lives in aquarium.

We use 'в' because the preceding word ends in a vowel. The masculine noun 'акваріум' takes the '-і' ending.

  3. Він в аптеці.

    He is in the pharmacy.

Word by Word: He in pharmacy.

Notice the consonant alternation: 'аптека' becomes 'аптеці' because 'к' changes to 'ц' before the ending '-і'.

  4. Діти грають у дворі.

The children are playing in the yard.

Word by Word: Children play in yard.

The preposition 'у' is used because the following word starts with the consonant cluster 'дв'.

  5. Він зараз у гаражі.

He is in the garage right now.

Word by Word: He now in garage.

The masculine noun 'гараж' takes the '-і' ending in the Locative case.

  6. Ви живете в готелі.

    You live in a hotel.

Word by Word: You live in hotel.

The preposition 'в' is used between a vowel and a consonant. The masculine noun 'готель' takes the '-і' ending.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Accusative case for static location.

    Я зараз у будинок.
    Я зараз у будинку.

'У будинок' (Accusative) means 'into the house' (direction). For 'in the house' (location), you must use the Locative 'у будинку'.

  • Forgetting the consonant mutation (к/г/х).

    Вона в аптекі.
    Вона в аптеці.

In Ukrainian, the 'к' in 'аптека' must mutate to 'ц' before the Locative ending '-і'.

  • Ignoring euphony rules between 'в' and 'у'.

    Він в школі.
    Він у школі.

After a consonant ('Він') and before a consonant ('школі'), Ukrainian uses 'у', not 'в'. After a vowel, 'в' before a consonant is fine: 'Я в школі'.
