Instrumental Accompaniment with З/із/зі

Level 2Sounds Like orudnij suprovodu z/íz/zí

The Instrumental of Accompaniment indicates companionship or inclusion. It always requires the preposition з (with) followed by a noun or pronoun in the Instrumental case.

How It Works

This pattern is used to describe doing something together with another person, or a thing that comes with another thing.

1. Phonetic Variants (Euphony):
To keep the language melodic, the preposition changes based on the following sounds:

  • з: The standard form. Used before vowels and most single consonants (з братом).
  • із: Used mainly between consonants to avoid a difficult cluster (хліб із маслом).
  • зі: Used before words starting with з, с, ш, щ followed by another consonant, or other difficult clusters (зі стравою, зі мною).
  • зо: A variant used primarily to express 'approximately' with certain numerals (зо дві сотні) or in poetic contexts. Note that зі мною is the standard literary form for 'with me'.

2. Grammatical Structure:
The noun following the preposition must be in the Instrumental case. Common endings include:

  • Masculine/Neuter: -ом / -ем / -ям (з другом, із серцем).
  • Feminine: -ою / -ею / -єю (з водою, із сестрою, з піснею) or -ю for nouns ending in a consonant (з радістю).
  • Plural (all genders): -ами / -ями (з друзями, із сестрами).

3. Usage Nuance:
Use з with the Instrumental for people when expressing accompaniment (doing something together) or for ingredients (кава з молоком). Do not use it when a tool or transport is the means of the action; for those, use the Instrumental of Means without a preposition. However, you must use з if you are simply accompanying or holding the object.

Note: Be careful! When з/із/зі is used with the Genitive case, the meaning changes from 'with' to 'from' or 'off of'.

Examples (5)

  1. Я йду в парк із другом.

I am going to the park with a friend.

Word by Word: I go in park with friend.

Here, 'із другом' shows accompaniment. 'Другом' is the Instrumental form of 'друг'.

  2. Він п'є чай із цукром.

    He drinks tea with sugar.

Word by Word: He drinks tea with sugar.

'Цукром' is the Instrumental form of 'цукор'. The preposition 'із' is used for euphony between consonants.

  3. Ми розмовляємо зі Степаном.

    We are talking with Stepan.

Word by Word: We talk with Stepan.

'Зі' is used here because 'Степан' starts with a consonant cluster (ст-).

  4. Вона гуляє з собакою.

She is walking with a dog.

Word by Word: She walks with dog.

'Собакою' is the Instrumental form of the feminine noun 'собака'.

  5. Мама готує вечерю з сестрою.

Mom is cooking dinner with (my) sister.

Word by Word: Mom prepares dinner with sister.

'Сестрою' is the Instrumental form of 'сестра', showing who is helping with the action.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'з' for tools or instruments.

    Я пишу з ручкою.
    Я пишу ручкою.

In Ukrainian, tools (means) do not take a preposition. Using 'з' implies the pen is your companion, not your tool.

  • Using 'з' for transportation.

    Я їду з автобусом.
    Я їду автобусом.

To say you travel 'by' a vehicle, use the Instrumental case alone. 'З автобусом' would mean you are traveling alongside the bus.

  • Neglecting euphonic variants (using 'з' instead of 'зі').

    Він грає з мною.
    Він грає зі мною.

Before 'мною', the variant 'зі' (or sometimes 'зо') must be used to avoid the difficult 'з-мн' consonant cluster.
