-но/-то
Impersonal Passive in -но and -то
The impersonal passive (безособові форми на -но/-то) is used to state that something has been done. It focuses on the result rather than who did it. Unlike standard passive sentences, the object stays in the Accusative case, and there is no subject.
How It Works
The Ukrainian impersonal passive is a unique and highly productive feature of the language. It is often preferred over reflexive passive constructions with -ся because it sounds more natural and avoids ambiguity. Unlike reflexive forms, which can describe ongoing processes, the -но/-то forms focus strictly on a completed result.
1. Formation:
These forms are derived from the passive participle in -ний or -тий:
- -но: написаний → написано (written), спечений → спечено (baked).
- -то: відкритий → відкрито (opened), розбитий → розбито (broken).
2. Syntax and Case:
This is the most critical part for learners. Because the form is impersonal, there is no Nominative subject. The thing being acted upon is usually the direct object in the Accusative case.
Example: Книжку (Acc.) прочитано. (The book has been read).
However, the object takes the Genitive case in two situations:
- Genitive of Negated Object: If the sentence is negated (Книжки не прочитано — The book has not been read).
- Partitive Genitive: For unspecified quantities (Налито води — Some water has been poured).
3. Tense and Agreement:
Unlike participles, these forms are indeclinable; they never change their ending to agree with the object. In the present tense, the auxiliary verb є is never used. To shift the time, use the auxiliary verb бути. For the future, use the third-person singular form буде. For the past, use the neuter singular form було:
- Past: було + -но/-то (Закон було ухвалено — The law was passed).
- Future: буде + -но/-то (Роботу буде зроблено — The work will be done).
4. Usage Nuance:
It is widely used in official documents, news reports, and signs (e.g., 'Зачинено' - Closed), but also in daily life to emphasize that a task is finished.
5. Agent Restriction:
A core rule in standard Ukrainian is that adding an agent (the doer of the action) in the Instrumental case (e.g., автором) is strictly incorrect with -но/-то forms. Instead of the grammatical error Книжку написано автором (The book was written by the author), you must use an active construction: Автор написав книжку (The author wrote the book). However, adding an instrument or means is perfectly fine (e.g., Ниву зорано трактором — The field was plowed by a tractor).
6. Aspect and Transitivity:
These forms are formed only from transitive verbs (verbs that take a direct object). You cannot form them from intransitive verbs like 'to go' or 'to sleep'. While they are overwhelmingly derived from perfective verbs to show a completed result, they can occasionally be formed from imperfective transitive verbs to denote a state (e.g., писано, сіяно).

- Цю статтю написано дуже цікаво.
This article is written very interestingly.
Word by Word: This article (Acc.) written very interestingly.
Notice that 'статтю' is in the Accusative case, even though it is the focus of the sentence.
- Вікно було розбито вчора ввечері.
The window was broken yesterday evening.
Word by Word: Window (Acc.) was broken yesterday evening.
The addition of 'було' places the result in the past tense.
- Усі двері зачинено на ремонт.
All doors are closed for renovation.
Word by Word: All doors (Acc.) closed for renovation.
Even though 'двері' is plural, the form 'зачинено' remains singular/impersonal.
- Проєкт буде завершено вчасно.
The project will be completed on time.
Word by Word: Project (Acc.) will be completed on time.
Using 'буде' indicates a future result.
- Цю проблему вирішено.
This problem has been solved.
Word by Word: This problem (Acc.) solved.
The feminine noun 'проблему' is clearly in the Accusative case, acting as the direct object of the impersonal form.
Common Mistakes
Using the Nominative case for the object.
Книжка прочитано.Книжку прочитано.In this construction, there is no subject. The object must be in the Accusative case (книжку), not the Nominative (книжка), unless it requires the Genitive due to negation or partitive meaning.
Adding an agent in the Instrumental case (by someone).
Different MeaningЛист написано мною.Я написав лист. / Лист написано.Careful Ukrainian usually leaves the doer unnamed with -но/-то forms, and an Instrumental agent ('мною') is criticised in some style guides, although such phrases do occur, especially in official writing. If the performer matters, use an active sentence.
Using the adjectival participle where the impersonal form is meant.
Different MeaningЛисти написані.Листи написано.'Листи написані' is correct: 'написані' is a passive participle that describes the letters. The impersonal form 'написано' names the action, never changes its ending, and takes an Accusative object.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand the impersonal -но/-то forms, you need to be familiar with the concept of perfective aspect (as these forms denote a finished result) and how the accusative case marks the object of the action. Knowledge of the neuter past tense is also helpful as these forms behave like impersonal neuter verbs.
- Perfective Aspect for Completed Results
Impersonal forms in -но/-то are derived from perfective passive participles and express a completed result.
Level 3 - Neuter Past Tense
These forms function similarly to the neuter past tense in impersonal sentences, presenting the action without a grammatical subject.
