де
Question Word Де
Use де to ask 'where' someone or something is currently located. It is an adverb that never changes its form.
How It Works
The word де is one of the most essential tools for basic communication in Ukrainian.
1. Location vs. Destination vs. Origin
Ukrainian makes a sharp distinction between three types of spatial questions: де (location), куди (destination/where to), and звідки (origin/where from). Use де when asking about a position or movement occurring within a specific place. If you are asking about a change of location or a goal, you must use куди.
2. Sentence Structure and Word Order
In the present tense, Ukrainian typically uses a zero copula, meaning the verb 'to be' (is/are) is omitted. While де usually starts the sentence, word order is flexible; you can place the subject first for emphasis (Банк де?).
3. Relative Clauses and Punctuation
When де is used to connect a description to a place (e.g., 'the city where I was born'), it is preceded by a mandatory comma. This helps separate the main clause from the relative clause.
4. Negative and Indefinite Derivatives
You will often see де as the root for other words or in specific phrases:
• ніде (stressed on the last syllable, meaning 'nowhere'): Requires a double negative. You must use не with the verb (e.g., Я ніде не бачив його).
• ніде (stressed on the first syllable, meaning 'nowhere to'): This does not take a double negative. It is a direct one-word synonym for немає де (e.g., Мені ніде сісти or Мені немає де сісти - I have nowhere to sit).
• де- (prefix): Used to form indefinite pronouns like дехто (someone/certain people) or дещо (something/a few things). This prefix implies 'a certain few' and is different from the suffix -сь (десь - somewhere), which is more vague.
• де-не-де: A common adverbial phrase meaning 'here and there' or 'in a few places' (e.g., Де-не-де лежить сніг - Snow lies here and there).
5. Grammatical Nature
Linguistically, де is an interrogative and relative adverb. This means it is invariable; it does not change based on gender, number, or case.
6. Common Idioms
The extremely common conversational idiom Де там! means 'No way!', 'Not at all!', or 'Yeah, right!' and is highly relevant for everyday speech.
Examples (6)
- Де ти?
Where are you?
Word by Word: Where you?
A standard question asking for a person's current location. Note the absence of the verb 'to be'.
- Де моя книжка?
Where is my book?
Word by Word: Where my book?
Used to ask about the location of a physical object.
- Де ви живете?
Where do you live?
Word by Word: Where you live?
Asking about a permanent place of residence using the second-person plural verb form.
- Він ніде не працює.
He doesn't work anywhere.
Word by Word: He nowhere not works.
When using the negative derivative 'ніде' (nowhere), you must also use the particle не with the verb. This is the mandatory double negative rule.
- Це будинок, де живе моя сестра.
This is the house where my sister lives.
Word by Word: This house, where lives my sister.
When 'де' acts as a connector in a relative clause, a comma is mandatory before it.
- Дехто вже прийшов.
Some people have already arrived.
Word by Word: Some-who already arrived.
The prefix 'де-' creates indefinite pronouns like 'дехто' (someone/certain people), implying a specific but unnamed few.
Common Mistakes
Using 'де' to ask about a destination (movement).
Де ти йдеш?Куди ти йдеш?In Ukrainian, 'де' is only for location. For movement toward a place, you must use куди.
Omitting the comma before 'де' in relative clauses.
Я знаю місце де ми зустрінемось.Я знаю місце, де ми зустрінемось.When 'де' connects two parts of a sentence, you must place a comma before it.
Forgetting the double negative with 'ніде'.
Я ніде був.Я ніде не був.Negative words like 'ніде' (nowhere) always require the verb to be negated with 'не'.
