якщо (реальна умова)
Real Condition with Якщо
The pattern якщо... (то)... is the standard way to express 'if... (then)...' for real, possible situations. Unlike English, when referring to future events, Ukrainian typically uses the future tense in both parts of the sentence, though present tense is used for general truths or current conditions.
How It Works
The якщо умови pattern is used for real conditions—things that are likely or possible. To become proficient in this structure, keep these rules in mind:
- Tense Usage: For future possibilities, Ukrainian usually uses the future tense in both clauses: Якщо піде дощ, я залишуся вдома. However, if the condition is happening now, you can use the present tense: Якщо ти хочеш, я допоможу тобі.
- General Truths and Instructions: For universal facts or habits, the present tense is common in both clauses. However, the condition clause often uses an infinitive to express a general action: Якщо воду нагріти, вона кипить.
- Certainty (якщо vs. коли): Use якщо for possibilities that might not happen. If the event is certain to occur (like a specific time or a guaranteed event), use коли instead: Коли прийде весна, стане тепло.
- Punctuation: In Ukrainian, a comma is mandatory between the condition and the result clause, regardless of which one comes first.
- The 'то' Particle: The word то (then) often starts the second clause. It is optional but common in speech for emphasis. If the result clause comes first, то is never used: Я прийду, якщо матиму час.
- Real vs. Unreal: Use this pattern only for things that can actually happen. For hypothetical 'what if' scenarios, you must use якби instead.
Examples (4)
- Якщо буде гарна погода, ми підемо в парк.
If the weather is good, we will go to the park.
Word by Word: If will-be good weather, we will-go in park.
Notice that both 'буде' (will be) and 'підемо' (will go) are in the future tense.
- Якщо ти хочеш, я допоможу тобі.
If you want, I will help you.
Word by Word: If you want, I will-help you.
Here, the condition is in the present ('хочеш'), but the result is in the future ('допоможу').
- Якщо натиснути кнопку, світло загориться.
If you press the button, the light will turn on.
Word by Word: If to-press button, light will-ignite.
An infinitive ('натиснути') can sometimes be used after 'якщо' for general instructions.
- Якщо вип'єш кави, то не зможеш заснути.
If you drink coffee, then you won't be able to fall asleep.
Word by Word: If you-will-drink coffee, then not you-will-be-able to-fall-asleep.
This example uses the optional particle 'то' to introduce the result.
Common Mistakes
Using the present tense for future conditions (English interference).
Якщо я маю час завтра, я прийду.Якщо я матиму час завтра, я прийду.After 'якщо', a future event usually takes a future form (матиму or буду мати). The present is possible for a fixed plan, but the future form is the clearer choice.
Using 'якщо' for indirect questions ('whether').
Я не знаю, якщо він прийде.Я не знаю, чи він прийде.When 'if' means 'whether' in an indirect question, you must use the particle чи.
Mixing 'якщо' with the conditional particle 'би'.
Якщо я мав би гроші, я б купив це.Якби я мав гроші, я б купив це.For hypothetical or unreal conditions, use 'якби' (or 'коли б') instead of 'якщо'. 'Якщо' is for real possibilities.

Additionally, since these conditions typically refer to future possibilities, the learner needs to be proficient in both the perfective present (used for future meaning) and the analytic future tense to form the result clause correctly.
