Aspect Pair Читати/прочитати

Level 2Sounds Like vidova para čitati/pročitati

The pair читати/прочитати represents the fundamental contrast between an ongoing action (imperfective) and a completed result (perfective). Adding the prefix про- signals that the reading task was finished entirely.

How It Works

In Ukrainian, verbs come in pairs to show 'aspect.' This pair is a classic example:

  • Process vs. Result: Use читати for the act of reading. Use прочитати when you finish the text.
  • Two Future Forms: The imperfective 'читати' has two ways to express the future: the analytic form (буду читати) and the synthetic form (читатиму). Both mean 'I will be reading.' The perfective 'прочитати' uses a simple future (прочитаю) to mean 'I will finish reading.'
  • Phase Verbs: When you use verbs like 'start' (почати), 'continue' (продовжувати), or 'finish' (закінчити), you must follow them with the imperfective читати. You cannot say 'почав прочитати.'
  • Objects: Both verbs take a direct object in the Accusative case.

Examples (6)

  1. Я зараз читаю цікаву книжку.

I am reading an interesting book right now.

Word by Word: I now read interesting book.

Uses the imperfective 'читаю' because the action is currently in progress.

  2. Він уже прочитав цю статтю.

He has already read this article.

Word by Word: He already read [finished] this article.

Uses the perfective 'прочитав' to show the reading is finished and the result is achieved.

  3. Я читатиму цю книжку завтра.

I will be reading this book tomorrow.

Word by Word: I will-read this book tomorrow.

Demonstrates the synthetic future of the imperfective verb.

  4. Завтра я обов’язково прочитаю твій лист.

Tomorrow I will definitely read your letter.

Word by Word: Tomorrow I definitely will-read [finish] your letter.

The perfective future 'прочитаю' implies the speaker will read the letter to the end.

  5. Я почав читати цей роман учора.

I started reading this novel yesterday.

Word by Word: I started to-read this novel yesterday.

After phase verbs like 'почати', you must use the imperfective infinitive 'читати'.

  6. Я буду читати весь вечір.

I will be reading all evening.

Word by Word: I will be to-read all evening.

The analytic future 'буду читати' focuses on the duration of the process.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'буду' with the perfective verb.

    Я буду прочитати цю книгу.
    Я прочитаю цю книгу.

The auxiliary 'бути' (will be) can only be used with imperfective infinitives. The perfective future is always a single conjugated word.

  • Using the perfective for what you are doing right now.

    Different MeaningЗараз я прочитаю газету.
    Зараз я читаю газету.

'Зараз я прочитаю газету' is correct, but it means 'I will read the newspaper (and finish it) now', not 'I am reading now'. A perfective verb does not describe the present.
