якби + Conditional

Hypothetical Clauses with Якби

Level 3Sounds Like âkbi + umovnij sposíb

якби + past tense verb (condition), past tense verb + би/б (result)

How It Works

The pattern якби + умовний спосіб (conditional mood) is the primary way to express counterfactual conditions in Ukrainian.

1. Structure:
A hypothetical sentence consists of two parts:

  • Condition: якби + past tense verb. Note that якби already contains the particle 'би', so do not add another one in this clause.
  • Result: past tense verb + particle би/б. While the particle often follows the verb, it can also precede it for emphasis.

2. Agreement:
Because the conditional mood uses the past tense form, the verb must agree with the subject in gender and number:

  • Якби він знав... (Masculine)
  • Якби вона знала... (Feminine)
  • Якби вони знали... (Plural)

3. Time Reference:
Ukrainian uses the same structure for both present and past hypothetical conditions. The timeframe is understood through context or adverbs:

  • Якби я знав це зараз... (If I knew this now...)
  • Якби я знав це вчора... (If I had known this yesterday...)

4. The Particle би vs. б:
The choice depends on the preceding sound to maintain euphony:

  • Use б after a vowel (e.g., вона знала б).
  • Use би after a consonant (e.g., він знав би).

Examples (4)

  1. Якби я мав гроші, я б купив цю машину.

If I had the money, I would buy this car.

Word by Word: If I had money, I [particle] would-buy this car.

A present hypothetical situation. Note that 'мав' is the masculine past tense form of 'мати' (to have).

  2. Якби ти мені сказав раніше, я б тобі допоміг.

If you had told me earlier, I would have helped you.

Word by Word: If you to-me told earlier, I [particle] to-you helped.

A past counterfactual situation. The structure remains the same as the present hypothetical.

  3. Якби було тепло, ми б гуляли в парку.

If it were warm, we would be walking in the park.

Word by Word: If [it] were warm, we [particle] would-walk in park.

An impersonal hypothetical condition using the neuter past tense 'було'.

  4. Якби вона знала правду, вона б не плакала.

If she knew the truth, she wouldn't be crying.

Word by Word: If she knew truth, she [particle] not would-cry.

Note the use of 'б' after the vowel in 'вона' and 'знала' for better flow.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting the particle 'би/б' in the main clause.

    Якби я знав, я прийшов.
    Якби я знав, я б прийшов.

In Ukrainian, the conditional particle must appear in both the 'if' clause (hidden inside 'якби') and the result clause.

  • Using the present tense instead of the past tense base.

    Якби я маю час, я б пішов.
    Якби я мав час, я б пішов.

The conditional mood always requires the past tense form of the verb, even when talking about the present.

  • Confusing 'якби' (if) with 'якщо' (if/when).

Якби ти прийдеш завтра, ми підемо в кіно.
Якщо ти прийдеш завтра, ми підемо в кіно.

Use 'якщо' for real possibilities in the future. Use 'якби' only for hypothetical or impossible scenarios.
