Past Tense + би / б

Conditional with Би and Б

Level 3Sounds Like umovnij sposíb z bi / b

The conditional mood (умовний спосіб) is used for 'would' statements, wishes, and polite requests. It is formed by: Past Tense Verb + би/б.

How It Works

The conditional mood is essential for expressing things that aren't currently true but could be, or for softening your speech.

1. Formation:
To form the conditional, take the past tense form of the verb and add the particle би or б.

  • Use б if the preceding word ends in a vowel (e.g., Вона знала б).
  • Use би if the preceding word ends in a consonant (e.g., Він знав би).

2. Agreement:
Because the base is the past tense, you must match the subject's gender and number:

3. Fused Conjunctions:
While the particle is usually a separate word, it fuses with certain conjunctions to form new words: якби (if - for hypothetical conditions) and щоб (in order to). Note that якщо is used for real, possible conditions with the indicative mood.

4. Impersonal Wishes:
The conditional can be used with an інфінітив to express a general desire or wish without a specific subject (e.g., Відвідати б Одесу - If only one could visit Odesa).

5. Word Order:
The particle is mobile. While it often follows the verb, it can move to follow pronouns or conjunctions for emphasis (e.g., Я б це зробив).

Examples (6)

  1. Я б з радістю поїхав у гори.

I would gladly go to the mountains.

Word by Word: I [would] with joy went to mountains.

Here, 'б' follows the vowel 'Я' and the verb 'поїхав' is in the masculine past tense.

  2. Ви не могли б мені допомогти?

    Could you help me?

Word by Word: You not could [would] me to help?

A polite request using the plural past tense 'могли' and the particle 'б'.

  3. Вона купила б це авто, але воно дороге.

She would buy this car, but it is expensive.

Word by Word: She bought [would] this car, but it expensive.

The feminine past tense 'купила' is followed by 'б' because it ends in a vowel.

  4. Ми зробили б це раніше.

We would have done it earlier.

Word by Word: We did [would] this earlier.

Uses 'б' after the vowel in 'зробили' to follow euphony rules.

  5. Воно світило б раніше, якби не було хмарно.

It would have shone earlier if it hadn't been cloudy.

Word by Word: It shone [would] earlier, if [would] not been cloudy.

Demonstrates the neuter form 'світило' and the hypothetical conjunction 'якби'.

  6. Поїхати б на море!

If only I could go to the sea!

Word by Word: To go [would] to sea!

The conditional particle used with an infinitive expresses an impersonal wish or desire.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the wrong gender for the speaker.

    Я (жінка) хотів би кави.
    Я (жінка) хотіла б кави.

Since the conditional uses the past tense form, a female speaker must use the feminine ending -ла.

  • Ignoring euphony rules for би vs б.

    Вона знала би.
    Вона знала б.

After a vowel like 'а', you should use the short form 'б' to make the sentence flow better.

  • Using the present tense with the particle.

    Я йду би додому.
    Я пішов би додому.

The regular conditional is formed from the past tense verb form plus би or б. It is not formed from a present or future verb form.
