порівняно з + Instrumental
Academic Comparison Frame
Use порівняно з + instrumental case to establish a benchmark for analysis in formal, academic, or official contexts.
How It Works
The construction порівняно з is a common choice for formal Ukrainian when comparing two entities or time periods.
1. Morphological Requirements:
Historically derived from an impersonal verbal form, порівняно з has grammaticalized into a derivative complex preposition. The object being compared must be in the instrumental case. The preposition з may change to зі or із to maintain euphony (e.g., порівняно зі статтею). Note that while the verb порівнювати takes a direct object in the accusative, the benchmark it is compared to still uses з + instrumental.
2. Syntactic Role and Punctuation:
It acts as an adverbial modifier. As an adverbial modifier of comparison, it is frequently set off by commas not only at the beginning of a sentence but also in the middle or at the end, especially if extended or carrying logical weight. Additionally, порівняно can function as a standalone adverb meaning "relatively" or "comparatively" (e.g., порівняно теплий день).
3. Stylistic Nuance and Alternatives:
The most natural use of this frame is with the positive (base) degree of an adjective to establish a comparison (e.g., Він високий порівняно зі мною). While found in official styles with comparative adjectives, using за, від, or ніж is often preferred for stylistic conciseness in those contexts. Other alternatives include як порівняти з and the adverbial participle порівнюючи з. The preposition проти + genitive is also a traditional phrasing. Crucially, avoid у порівнянні з, which is a stylistic calque.
Examples (4)
- Порівняно з попереднім роком, рівень інфляції суттєво знизився.
Compared with the previous year, the inflation rate has significantly decreased.
Word by Word: Compared with previous year, level [of] inflation significantly decreased.
Here, 'попереднім роком' is in the instrumental case. Note that there is typically a comma after the phrase when it begins the sentence, acting as a detached adverbial modifier.
- Порівняно з іншими країнами регіону, Україна має значний аграрний потенціал.
Compared with other countries in the region, Ukraine has significant agricultural potential.
Word by Word: Compared with other countries [of] region, Ukraine has significant agricultural potential.
This example shows the phrase used at the beginning of a sentence to frame a geographical comparison, separated by a comma to mark the intonational pause.
- Результати експерименту виявилися позитивними, порівняно з контрольними показниками.
The results of the experiment proved positive compared to the control indicators.
Word by Word: Results [of] experiment proved positive, compared with control indicators.
In this scientific context, the phrase follows the predicate. It is set off by a comma here because it acts as an extended adverbial modifier carrying logical weight.
- Порівняно зі статтею минулого тижня, цей текст має зовсім іншу структуру.
Compared with last week's article, this text has a completely different structure.
Word by Word: Compared with article [of] last week, this text has completely different structure.
Note the use of 'зі' instead of 'з' to avoid the consonant cluster 'з ст-'. This construction is highly versatile and can be used with both standard descriptions and comparative adjectives.
Common Mistakes
Using the Genitive case instead of the Instrumental case.
Порівняно з минулого року...Порівняно з минулим роком...The preposition 'з' in this construction always governs the instrumental case, not the genitive.
Confusing the direct object of the verb 'порівняти' with the comparison standard.
Порівняно результати з минулими...Порівняти результати з минулими...The verb 'порівняти' takes a direct object in the accusative case (the thing you are comparing), but both the verb and the frame 'порівняно з' use 'з' + instrumental case for the standard of comparison.
Using the stylistic error 'у порівнянні з'.
У порівнянні з іншими...Порівняно з іншими...The phrase 'у порівнянні з' is a stylistic error and a direct calque of the Russian 'по сравнению с'. Modern Ukrainian style guides and linguists strictly recommend using 'порівняно з' or other native alternatives.
