-но/-то (безособовий пасив)

Impersonal Passive in -но/-то

Level 6Sounds Like bezosobovij pasiv na -no/-to

The impersonal passive (e.g., зроблено, закрито) is a unique Ukrainian way to state that an action is finished. It focuses on the result rather than who did it.

How It Works

The impersonal passive is one of the most characteristic features of Ukrainian syntax. It is used to express a perfective result where the agent (the person doing the action) is unknown, irrelevant, or intentionally omitted.

1. Formation:
These forms are derived from the passive participle in -ний or -тий by replacing the ending with -о:

  • зроблений (done) → зроблено
  • прийнятий (accepted) → прийнято
  • написаний (written) → написано

2. Syntax:
This is a subjectless construction. The logical object of the action is typically in the Accusative case. For example: Книгу (Acc.) написано (The book has been written).

3. Tense:
By itself, the form implies the present result of a past action. To explicitly place it in the past or future, use the neuter singular form of the auxiliary verb бути:

  • Past: було + -но/-то (Вікно було відчинено)
  • Future: буде + -но/-то (Роботу буде виконано)

4. Usage Nuance:
In formal Ukrainian, you should not include the agent in the Instrumental case (e.g., avoid saying 'written by him'). If the agent is important, use the active voice instead.

Examples (5)

  1. Закон уже прийнято.

The law has already been passed.

Word by Word: Law already accepted.

Here, 'прийнято' is the impersonal form of 'прийняти'. The focus is entirely on the fact that the law is now in effect.

  2. Цю книжку було написано минулого року.

This book was written last year.

Word by Word: This book was written last year.

Using 'було' places the completed result in the past. 'Книжку' is in the Accusative case.

  3. Двері зачинено на ремонт.

The doors are closed for renovation.

Word by Word: Doors closed for renovation.

Even though 'двері' is plural, the form 'зачинено' remains unchanged because it is indeclinable.

  4. Усе буде зроблено вчасно.

Everything will be done on time.

Word by Word: Everything will-be done on-time.

The future auxiliary 'буде' is used here to indicate a result that will exist in the future.

  5. Шлях пройдено.

    The path has been traveled.

    Word by Word: Path traveled.

A common idiomatic way to say a journey or a stage of life is complete.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the agreeing passive participle where the impersonal -но/-то form is wanted.

    Different MeaningСтаття була написана.
    Статтю було написано.

While 'Стаття була написана' is a valid personal passive, the impersonal construction 'Статтю було написано' is often preferred in Ukrainian for focusing on the event. Remember that -но/-то forms never change their endings.

  • Adding an agent in the Instrumental case.

    Текст написано автором.
    Автор написав текст.

Forms in -но/-то are impersonal and normally do not name the doer. 'Текст написано автором' occurs in official style, but careful writers avoid it. If you want to mention the author, use the active voice or an agreeing participle.
