Analytic Comparative with Більш
The analytic comparative is formed by placing the invariable adverb більш (more) before a standard adjective. It is the Ukrainian equivalent of saying 'more interesting' instead of 'interest-er'.
How It Works
The analytic comparative (аналітичний вищий ступінь) is one of two ways to compare qualities in Ukrainian. While the synthetic form (using the suffix -ш- or -іш-) is often preferred for a more natural and organic Ukrainian style, the analytic form is a useful alternative for specific contexts.
1. Formation:
Simply place більш (more) or менш (less) before the adjective. These words never change their endings, but the adjective following them must match the noun it describes in gender, number, and case. Never combine 'більш/менш' with the synthetic '-ш-/-іш-' form (e.g., більш цікавіший is wrong).
- більш цікавий фільм (more interesting movie)
- менш цікава книжка (less interesting book)
2. When to use it:
The analytic form is helpful for:
- Long adjectives: Words with many syllables (e.g., більш відповідальний - more responsible) to avoid phonetic complexity.
- Complex loanwords: Technical or highly specialized terms (e.g., більш екстравагантний) where adding suffixes might sound unnatural.
- Participles: Words acting as adjectives (e.g., більш розвинений - more developed). True participles natively do not have degrees of comparison at all; they can only be compared if they have fully transitioned into qualitative adjectives.
- Precision: It is common in scientific or business writing to avoid the stem mutations required by the synthetic form, though overusing it can sometimes feel like a calque from other languages.
3. Comparisons:
To say 'more/less ... than', you can use the comparison markers ніж or як (followed by the same case as the noun being compared), or the prepositions за (with Accusative) and від (with Genitive). Note that a comma is required before the conjunctions ніж and як, but no comma is used before the prepositions за and від (e.g., більш цікавий, ніж цей фільм; більш цікавий за цей фільм).
