Predicative Instrumental

Level 6Sounds Like orudnij predikativnij

The Predicative Instrumental marks a noun or adjective that describes the subject's role, status, or state when using a linking verb (except in the present tense zero-copula).

How It Works

The Predicative Instrumental (орудний предикативний) is a fundamental part of Ukrainian syntax. It is used to complete the meaning of a verb by describing a quality or identity of the subject.

1. When to use it:

  • With the past and future tenses of бути (to be).
  • With verbs of becoming or change, such as стати (to become) or залишатися (to remain).
  • With verbs of occupation like працювати (to work as).
  • With verbs of perception or naming like вважатися (to be considered) or називатися (to be called).

2. The Tense Distinction:
In the present tense, Ukrainian typically uses a zero copula and the Nominative case (Він лікар - He is a doctor). However, as soon as an overt verb is used (past, future, or infinitive), the Instrumental becomes the grammatical default (Він був лікарем - He was a doctor).

3. Adjective Agreement:
If an adjective is part of the predicate, it must also be in the Instrumental case and agree with the subject in gender and number. Note that Ukrainian only uses long-form adjectives in this construction; short-form adjectives are restricted to the Nominative.

Examples (5)

  1. Він став відомим архітектором.

    He became a famous architect.

Word by Word: He became famous architect [Instrumental].

The verb 'стати' (to become) triggers the Instrumental case for both the adjective and the noun.

  2. Моя сестра працює перекладачкою.

My sister works as a translator.

Word by Word: My sister works translator [Instrumental].

In Ukrainian, 'to work as' is expressed by the verb 'працювати' followed directly by the Instrumental case, without using 'як' (as).

  3. Ця книга вважається найкращою в серії.

This book is considered the best in the series.

Word by Word: This book considers-itself best [Instrumental] in series.

The verb 'вважатися' (to be considered) uses the Instrumental to denote the status or quality assigned to the subject.

  4. Він буде хорошим батьком.

He will be a good father.

Word by Word: He will-be good [Instrumental] father [Instrumental].

The future tense of 'to be' requires the Instrumental case for the predicate role.

  5. Вона була вчителькою багато років.

She was a teacher for many years.

Word by Word: She was teacher [Instrumental] many years.

Even for long-term roles, the past tense of 'to be' triggers the Instrumental in modern standard Ukrainian.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'як' where the bare Instrumental is plain.

    Different MeaningЯ працюю як менеджер.
    Я працюю менеджером.

'Я працюю як менеджер' is correct. The bare Instrumental ('працюю менеджером') names your job; 'як менеджер' says you act in the role of a manager.

  • Using the Nominative after the past tense of 'бути'.

    Different MeaningВін був лікар.
    Він був лікарем.

'Він був лікар' is correct. The Instrumental ('лікарем') is the more usual choice for a job or role in the past, especially a temporary one.

  • Using the Instrumental case in the present tense with a zero copula.

    Він лікарем.
    Він лікар.

When the verb 'to be' is omitted in the present tense, the predicate noun must remain in the Nominative case.

Learn This First

The 'predicative instrumental' is a sophisticated syntactic role where the instrumental case marks a temporary status, role, or quality assigned to a subject or object. To learn this, a learner must first understand the basic instrumental case for roles (with 'to be' or 'to become'), how specific verbs like 'to consider' or 'to name' govern both an object and a role, and how adjectives agree when used in this predicative position.
