मला … लागेल

Needing Something

Level 3Sounds Like malā … lāgēla

The verb matches the thing: लागेल for one, लागतील for many.

How It Works

For "I need a pen" Marathi says "a pen is required to me": मला पेन लागेल. The thing needed is the subject, so the verb agrees with it, and a man and a woman say the same words.

NeedVerb
one thing, laterलागेल
many things, laterलागतील
one thing, in generalलागते (लागतो for a masculine thing)
many things, in generalलागतात

The future forms लागेल and लागतील are the same for masculine, feminine and neuter things. The general forms लागतो, लागते and लागतात change with the thing: चहा लागतो, वही लागते.

Questions put का at the end: तुम्हाला मदत लागेल का? (Will you need help?)

For a wish, use पाहिजे or हवा instead. मला पाहिजे says you want it, and मला लागेल says you will need it.

Examples (5)

  1. मला पेन लागेल.

    I will need a pen.

पेन is the thing needed, and लागेल follows it.

  2. मला दोन तिकिटे लागतील.

    I will need two tickets.

दोन तिकिटे is plural, so the verb is लागतील.

  3. तुम्हाला मदत लागेल का?

    Will you need help?

का turns the sentence into a question.

  4. सईला एक वही लागेल.

    Sai will need a notebook.

Sai takes -ला, and वही is the thing needed.

  5. पुरणपोळीसाठी हरभऱ्याची डाळ लागते.

    Puran poli needs chana dal.

डाळ is feminine, so the general verb is लागते.

Common Mistakes

  • Using मी as the subject.

    मी पेन लागेल.
    मला पेन लागेल.

The person who needs takes -ला.

  • Using a singular verb with a plural thing.

    मला दोन तिकिटे लागेल.
    मला दोन तिकिटे लागतील.

दोन तिकिटे is plural, so the verb is plural.
