-ावे लागणे
Having to Do Something
The ending -ावे and the verb लागणे both follow the thing done, so they can change.
How It Works
This pattern says that something is necessary and the person has no choice. The person takes -ला (मला, तिला, आम्हाला). The action is in the -ावे form, and लागणे comes last.
When the action has no object, or the object is neuter singular, the form is -ावे: मला उठावे लागेल. When the action has an object without -ला, -ावे and लागणे match its gender. An object with -ला keeps both neuter: मला सईला बोलवावे लागेल.
| Object | Future | Past |
|---|---|---|
| masculine (चहा) | मला चहा आणावा लागेल. | मला चहा आणावा लागला. |
| feminine (भाजी) | मला भाजी आणावी लागेल. | मला भाजी आणावी लागली. |
| neuter (औषध) | मला औषध घ्यावे लागेल. | मला औषध घ्यावे लागले. |
The future form लागेल stays the same for every single object. For several objects use लागतील: मला दोन पुस्तके आणावी लागतील. The present is लागते, लागतो, लागतात and follows the object: तिला रोज औषध घ्यावे लागते. (She has to take medicine every day.)
A man and a woman say the same words, because the verb follows the object and the -ला person is not marked.
For a wish to do something, use मला … -ायचे आहे instead. Use -ावे लागणे only for a duty or a need.
