मला भूक लागली आहे

Hunger, Thirst and Other Feelings

Level 2Sounds Like malā bhūka lāgalī āhē

Each feeling has its own verb: लागणे for hunger and thirst, वाजणे for cold, येणे for sleep and boredom.

How It Works

The feeling comes to the person, so the sentence starts with मला: मला भूक लागली आहे.

MarathiMeaning
मला भूक लागली आहे.I'm hungry.
मला तहान लागली आहे.I'm thirsty.
मला थंडी वाजते.I'm cold.
मला झोप येते.I'm sleepy.
मला कंटाळा आला आहे.I'm bored.

For hunger and thirst, speakers use the past form with आहे because the feeling has already started. For "was hungry", use होती: मला भूक लागली होती.

Heat uses होणे: मला खूप गरम होते. (I feel very hot.)

Change the person by changing -ला: तुला, त्याला, तिला, आम्हाला, आईला. The verb stays the same, because it follows the feeling and not the person.

A plural person changes nothing else: मुलांना भूक लागली आहे. (The children are hungry.)

Examples (5)

  1. मला भूक लागली आहे.

    I'm hungry.

    भूक लागली आहे follows मला.

  2. तुला तहान लागली आहे का?

    Are you thirsty?

तुला is the person; तहान is feminine, so लागली.

  3. आईला थंडी वाजते.

    Mother feels cold.

वाजते agrees with थंडी, not with आई.

  4. मुलांना झोप येते.

    The children are sleepy.

मुलांना names the children, and झोप येते names the feeling.

  5. मुलांना खूप भूक लागली आहे.

    The children are very hungry.

भूक is feminine, so लागली stays the same with मुलांना.

Common Mistakes

  • Using मी with the feeling.

    मी भूक लागली आहे.
    मला भूक लागली आहे.

The person takes -ला, so the sentence begins with मला.

  • Making the verb agree with the person.

    मला तहान लागला आहे.
    मला तहान लागली आहे.

तहान is feminine, so the verb is लागली.
