मिळणे

Getting Something

Level 3Sounds Like miḷaṇē

The verb matches the thing you get: नोकरी मिळाली, तिकीट मिळाले.

How It Works

Marathi says "a ticket came to me" for "I got a ticket": मला तिकीट मिळाले. The person takes -ला (मला, तिला, आम्हाला), and the thing decides the verb.

ThingOneMany
masculine (आंबा)मिळालामिळाले
feminine (नोकरी)मिळालीमिळाल्या
neuter (तिकीट)मिळालेमिळाली

The present follows the same pattern: मिळतो for one masculine thing, मिळते for one feminine or neuter thing, and मिळतात for many things. The word also means "is available": इथे चांगली भाजी मिळते. (Good vegetables are available here.)

The speaker's own gender does not show in this pattern. A man and a woman both say मला तिकीट मिळाले.

Do not use मी as the subject. The thing you get is the subject, and you are the one who receives it. Past plurals follow the thing too: मला दोन तिकिटे मिळाली. (I got two tickets.)

Examples (5)

  1. मला तिकीट मिळाले.

    I got a ticket.

तिकीट is neuter, so the verb is मिळाले.

  2. तिला नोकरी मिळाली.

    She got a job.

नोकरी is feminine, so the verb is मिळाली.

  3. इथे चांगली भाजी मिळते.

    Good vegetables are available here.

    मिळते here means is available.

  4. आम्हाला सुट्टी मिळाली नाही.

सुट्टी is feminine, so the verb is मिळाली.

  5. तुला ही बातमी कुठे मिळाली?

Where did you get this news?

बातमी is feminine, so the verb is मिळाली.

Common Mistakes

  • Using मी as the subject.

    मला तिकीट मिळाले.

The person who gets takes -ला.

  • Not matching the verb to the thing.

    मला सुट्टी मिळाला.
    मला सुट्टी मिळाली.

सुट्टी is feminine, so the verb ends in -ली.
