The main clause tells what has been true from that moment: a state, a habit or a feeling.

How It Works

-ल्यापासून names a starting point in time. It answers “since when?” and joins the verb as one word.

The first clause can have its own doer: तो गेल्यापासून घर रिकामे वाटते. The main clause says what has been going on since then, so it usually uses the present (आहे, वाटते, वाचतो, शिकते) or a negative past (भेटलो नाही).

In English you say “I've been happy since I came”. Marathi uses a present verb here: आनंदी आहे.

The pattern is related to -पासून after a noun: सोमवारपासून means “from Monday”. A verb in front of it names an event as the starting point.

Do not use -ल्यावर here. -ल्यावर means “after doing” and does not say that the state continues until now.

Words like तेव्हापासून (since then) and आजपर्यंत (until today) go well in the main clause: तो गेल्यापासून मी त्याला भेटलो नाही. (I haven't met him since he left.)

    I've been very happy ever since I came to Pune.

    आल्यापासून marks the starting point; आहे shows it is still true.

  2. तो गेल्यापासून घर रिकामे वाटते.

    The house has felt empty ever since he left.

    गेल्यापासून has तो as its own doer.

  3. पाऊस सुरू झाल्यापासून रस्ते बंद आहेत.

    The roads have been closed since the rain began.

    झाल्यापासून follows सुरू होणे.

  4. मी शाळेत गेल्यापासून रोज वाचतो.

    I've read every day since I started school. A man is speaking.

    वाचतो ends in -तो because the speaker is a man.

  5. तिला भेटल्यापासून मी रोज मराठी शिकते.

    I've studied Marathi every day since I met her. A woman is speaking.

    शिकते ends in -ते because the speaker is a woman.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the wrong stem.

    पुण्याला आलोपासून मी खूप आनंदी आहे.
    पुण्याला आल्यापासून मी खूप आनंदी आहे.

    The form is आल्यापासून, with -ल्या-.

  • Writing -पासून apart.

    पुण्याला आल्या पासून मी खूप आनंदी आहे.
    पुण्याला आल्यापासून मी खूप आनंदी आहे.

    -पासून joins the verb.
