-ऊन / -ून

Linking Closely Related Actions

Level 3Sounds Like ūna / -̔ūna

The first verb has no tense and no person ending, and the last verb carries both.

How It Works

Use -ऊन or -ून for actions that follow each other. The first verb is a short link, and the last verb tells the tense.

VerbLinking form
करणेकरून
वाचणेवाचून
जाणेजाऊन
घेणेघेऊन

The last verb decides the tense: मी जेवून झोपले (past), मी जेवून झोपेन (future), जेवून झोप (command).

In this chain of actions, the linking verb and the last verb share one subject. In ती दुकानात जाऊन भाजी आणेल, the same person goes and buys.

Write करून with a long ू. The short form करुन is a spelling mistake.

धुणे has two linking forms: धुऊन and धुवून. Both are standard, and the examples here use धुऊन.

This pattern is also the first half of many compound verbs: करून घेणे, लिहून ठेवणे.

  • Writing the vowel short.
