असतो / असते / असतात
What Usually Is
आहे says what is true now, and असतो says what is true again and again.
How It Works
| Person | Man | Woman |
|---|---|---|
| मी | असतो | असते |
| तू | असतोस | असतेस |
| तो / ती | तो असतो | ती असते |
| आम्ही | असतो | |
| तुम्ही | असता | |
| ते (more than one) | असतात |
Compare आज बँक बंद आहे (the bank is closed today) with रविवारी बँक बंद असते (the bank is closed on Sundays). The second sentence tells a rule or a routine.
Words like रोज, नेहमी and सकाळी go with it: मी सकाळी नेहमी ऑफिसमध्ये असते.
It also tells a general truth: उन्हाळ्यात खूप गरम असते (it is very hot in summer).
To ask about a routine, use असता with तुम्ही: तुम्ही रोज कुठे असता? (Where are you every day?)
For one moment right now, use आहे: मी आत्ता घरी आहे.
It also describes a usual state of a person: तो नेहमी आनंदी असतो (he is always happy).
