Inferring What Has Happened
The English is “must have” or “probably has”: तो घरी पोहोचला असेल means he must have reached home.
How It Works
When you cannot see or check something, but the facts point to it, say the past form and then असेल. It is the plain way to say “he must have gone” or “they have probably finished”.

असेल is the future of असणे, so it changes for the person: असेल for तो, ती and one thing (ते); असतील for several; असशील for तू; असाल for तुम्ही; असेन for मी; असू for आम्ही.
With a transitive verb, the past form agrees with the object (neuter if the object has -ला) and a third-person doer takes -ने or -नी: त्यांनी जेवण केले असेल. A word like बहुधा (probably) or कदाचित (perhaps) shows how sure you are.
For a guess about something happening now, use -त असेल. For something that is true and complete, use -ले आहे.
A negative guess uses नसेल: तो अजून पोहोचला नसेल. (He probably hasn't reached yet.)

झोपली असेल agrees with सई, a woman.

जेवण is neuter, so the past form is केले.
- तुला खूप भूक लागली असेल.
You must be very hungry.
भूक लागली असेल guesses a feeling that has already started.
- बस आधीच निघाली असेल.
The bus has probably left already.
बस is feminine, so निघाली असेल.

Using a singular असेल with a plural subject.
